Navigating the skincare world can be tricky. Certain ingredients may sound near-miraculous and may highly appeal to you, but whether or not they play well with your skin is a whole different story.

When it comes to shopping for skincare that actually works, understanding ingredients is key. This way, you can ensure that the products that you’re using contain ingredients that not only benefit your skin type, but are also targeted toward the specific skin concerns and issues you’re facing.

Not sure where to begin? Read on – Avinichi has put together a handy guide on how to choose the very best ingredients for your skin.

Know Your Skin Type

Woman looking at skin

There are plenty of techniques out there for identifying skin type. However, the best way is to assess your skin over the course of a few days. Look at how it changes from morning to night.

Does it feel dry or overly tight? If so, you fall on the dry or dehydrated end of the scale. If, on the other hand, your skin looks and feels excessively greasy, then your skin type is likely to be oily. A bit of both would point toward combination, while skin that’s easily irritated and prone to inflammation can be classed as sensitive.

Knowing your skin type will go a long way in ensuring that you only pick the perfect ingredients for your skin.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is lacking in sebum, which is the natural oil produced by your skin. To make up for this, you should be looking for products that contain rich and moisturizing plant oils and butters. These will soften and smoothen the look and feel of dry skin, leaving it looking supple and fresh.

Here at Avinichi, some of our favorite ingredients for dry skin include shea butter, jojoba seed oil, and sunflower seed oil. You’ll find the full trifecta in the Avinichi Noni Night Repair Cream. Designed to deeply moisturize your skin while you sleep, it’ll have you waking up to a dewy and glowy complexion.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, then you should be looking for ingredients that’ll reduce the appearance of shine to give your complexion a smooth, matte finish. One of our favorite ingredients for doing that is kaolin, a clay that’s loved for how it detoxifies the feel of the skin.

Although not designed for everyday use, our Phyto Remedy Thermal Mask will leave your skin looking and feeling noticeably less oily. In addition to kaolin, it also contains a few other ingredients that are must-haves for those dealing with excess oil, such as vitamins A, C, and E. Together, they give the skin a more balanced look, with shine taking a backseat.

Dehydrated Skin

Many people confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin, but the two are very different. While dry skin is lacking in oil, dehydrated skin is lacking in moisture. So, in order to quench your parched skin, you need to treat it to ingredients that provide a dose of hydration.

One ingredient that you can count on for delivering this is hyaluronic acid or its salt form, sodium hyaluronate. Both have moisture-binding properties, enabling them to plump up and hydrate the look of thirsty skin. Glycerin, squalane, and aloe all have the same moisture-binding effects, which is what makes our Liquid Lift Overnight Melting Mask such a game-changer.

Not only does it contain all of the humectants mentioned above, but it’s also loaded with a long list of other hydrating botanical extracts. All of the superfruits that you’ll find in this leave-on face mask formula are exactly what your dehydrated skin has been looking for.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reacts easily, not only to skincare products but also to the environment. As a result, you need to provide your sensitive skin with ingredients that’ll leave it feeling soothed, calm, and relaxed.

There are a few go-to botanicals out there that are famed for doing just that. Chamomile is one example. In fact, this is why people drink chamomile tea before bed, as it’s known for its relaxing properties. Aloe vera is another ingredient that soothes the look of irritation, hence its common use in sunburn products. Cucumber fruit extract is yet another botanical that has very similar effects.

While each of those ingredients is powerful on its own, we decided to bring them all together in our Noni Pore Purifying Toner. In addition to the above organic botanicals, it’s also infused with allantoin and noni fruit extract, both of which are usually loved by sensitive skin.

Prioritize Your Skin Concerns

While some skincare products zero in on one specific skin type-related concern, such as dryness or dehydration, most contain ingredients that target several issues at once. So in order to pick an effective product, you need to pinpoint your specific skin concerns. Make a list of any visible skin issues that are bothering you, so that you can seek out ingredients that are capable of eradicating them.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

They may be inevitable, but fine lines and wrinkles are one of the most common skin complaints out there. Fortunately, whether you’re dealing with the early signs of light creases or your deep wrinkles are turning into little trenches, using the right skincare ingredients will help to smooth, firm, and tighten the look and feel of your skin.

When it comes to reducing the look of aging, antioxidants are key. And we’re not only talking about natural antioxidants that come from plant extracts. We also mean those very special vitamins that also serve as antioxidants. Vitamins A, C, and E are all good examples, and they work even better when combined with antioxidant-laden natural extracts.

You’ll find all of these ingredients plus so much more in the Avinichi Hydrating Antioxidant Serum, which can be found in our Phyto Thermal Collection. In fact, all of the products in this collection contain ingredients proven to minimize the look of aging, making them ideal if you’ve been noticing lines and wrinkles appearing on your face.

Dark Spots

While fine lines and wrinkles may be inevitable, dark spots aren’t. That said, most people still end up developing them. Why? For a number of reasons – sun damage, acne marks, hormonal changes – numerous factors can contribute to hyperpigmented skin.

Fortunately, there are several ingredients out there that are great at fading the visibility of dark spots. Vitamin C is one of our favorites. It has a significant lightening and brightening effect on the complexion. This not only diminishes the look of dark spots but also rebalances an uneven complexion.

Vitamin A is also fantastic for lightening the look of hyperpigmentation. Its potency increases when combined with vitamin C, which is exactly what we did when creating the Hydrating Multifruit Serum. Containing two forms of vitamin C, vitamin A, and a long list of plant oils that help to lighten the look of excess pigmentation, this silky serum will soon have your skin looking brighter and more even.

Dullness and Roughness

While several factors contribute to dullness and roughness, the most common reason for this is a buildup of dead skin cells. This happens naturally with age, since the body takes longer to naturally shed its older cells.

So, when it comes to countering that dull look that has taken over your skin, turn to ingredients that will remove that rough outer layer to reveal the radiance beneath. Vitamin A is a superstar at doing this, as is noni fruit extract, one of our signature ingredients here at Avinichi.

We’ve brought the two together in our Noni Polishing Peel. This product is a must if you’ve been battling a rough-looking appearance. Use it once or twice a week to remove dead cell buildup and you’ll notice that your skin starts to look softer, brighter, and younger.

Dark Circles and Puffiness

Since the skin around the eyes is significantly thinner than the skin anywhere else on the face or body, it needs to be treated with extra care. The ingredients that you use around your eyes need to be gentle. Additionally, the products you use around your eyes should be designed specifically for this delicate area.

That’s why we created the Avinichi Camu Camu Collection. This collection is dedicated solely to eye care.

Our Dark Circle Eye Perfecting Cream contains ingredients that lighten and brighten the look of dark circles. Vitamins A, C, and E combined with resveratrol are ideal for reducing the visibility of those circles and shadows. These are paired with caffeine, a popular ingredient in eye care products because of how it perks up the look of the skin.

On the other hand, if puffiness and sagging are your issues, look for ingredients that firm and tighten the look of the skin. Peptides are always recommended for this, and you’ll find plenty in our Eye Rescue Phyto Serum. It also contains several botanical extracts that will restore a puffy appearance back to its smooth former glory.

Don’t Fall for the Hype

Sometimes, a whole lotta hype surrounds a particular skincare ingredient. Whether warranted or not, the fact that an ingredient has become the talk of the town is enough to convince people to buy into it, even if it may not be right for their skin.

So, when it comes to choosing the right ingredients for your skin, don’t fall for any hype. Sure, if you hear of a new, cutting-edge ingredient that sounds intriguing, look into it further. However, make sure that it suits your skin type, as well as the skin concerns you’re dealing with, before deciding to add it to your skincare routine.

Don’t Be Afraid of a Long Ingredient List

There are both pros and cons to a skincare product with a long ingredient list. On the downside, it makes it so much harder to decipher what’s actually in that product. It also increases the chances of that product containing filler ingredients.

However, long ingredient lists aren’t always bad. This is especially true when it comes to products designed to reduce the look of aging.

So, if you see a long ingredient list, don’t immediately dismiss that product. Spend some time exploring those ingredients as they could be exactly what your skin needs.

The Importance of Understanding Ingredients

As you can see, different ingredients do very different things. If your skincare hasn’t been working for you in the way that it should be, then this could be because the ingredients used in those products simply aren’t right for your skin. Follow Avinichi’s advice above when choosing new products and ingredients and it won’t be long before your skin starts to look better than ever.
